Apartment Fire Displaces Residents, 1 Rescued

Shortly after 6am Thursday morning, Moyers Corners was alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center for a reported apartment fire at the Pine Hollow Apartments on Pine Hollow Drive, in the Station 4 response area.

Prior to the fire department’s arrival, multiple callers indicated a smoke condition and fire in one of the apartments, with the tenant from the involved apartment also calling into 911 indicating she was trapped and unable to leave.

Deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and an off duty Firefighter attempted to reach the trapped occupant but were unable due to the fire. They were able to make verbal contact and update incoming fire units of the occupants location. The occupant was in a bedroom on the B/C corner of the building. Car 3 [D/C Eldred] arrived and assumed command, while Engine 41 [FF Smith], Truck 2 [Lt Orchard] and Engine 11 [Lt Apples] arrived shortly after.

Engine 41 stretched a handline to the third floor apartment and began to attack the fire, while Truck 2 made entry and attempted to locate the resident who remained on the line with the 911 Calltaker. Lt Orchard found a now unconscious victim in the bedroom. Lt Orchard, Lt MacPherson, and FF Kozma moved the victim to the window. All 3 moved the victim out the window to Lt Apples, and with Belgium Cold Springs Engine 11, brought the victim down a ground ladder positioned at the bedroom window on side C.

The resident was transported to the hospital, where by the time they arrived was awake and talking to the Ambulance crew.

Additionally, Engine 31 [Lt Kiehn] and Engine 32 [Lt Sparkowski] assisted with searches and other fireground tasks in other apartments.

The well coordinated efforts by OCSO, the off duty firefighter, 911, Fire units, and EMS led to the successful rescue of the victim.

The Fire Department was assisted on-scene by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Onondaga Volunteer Ambulance (N.O.V.A.), Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps, Liverpool Fire Department, Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department, and the Lakeside Fire Department, as well as members from the Onondaga County Fire Investigation Unit.

Companies operated for approximately 3 and a half hours before returning to service.
